Belated birthday socks

Did I mention that Robin finally received his birthday hand knitted socks? Despite customs’ hindrance, they were only a week late. (I actually wrapped up one finished sock and the half-knitted tangle of needles and yarn that was the other sock so that he had something to unwrap on the day itself.)

The cable pattern up the front of the foot and leg is the “Big Cable” taken from Lykkefanten’s free pattern for Viking socks. This was my first attempt at cables, and for the sake of my sanity I taught myself how to cable without using a cable needle, using Grumperina’s technique here. I knit the sock toe-up using the magic loop method. (I’ll spare you the more technical details, but if anyone’s interested the socks are on Ravelry here.)

The socks are knitted in a yarn called Kypria (merino, bamboo and nylon mix) by the Sanguine Gryphon, in the Deep Bosomed Earth colourway. It’s gorgeous. And very difficult to do justice to in a photograph.
These socks are, I think, a big hit. There have been hints that more hand knit socks would be gratefully accepted. I can tell the long winter evenings are going to fly by this year….

Those are lovely! My husband loves hand knit socks–he’s the most appreciative of all my adult recipients, so I love making them for him. Bad news: he has huge feet, so it’s quite an undertaking. So far I have stayed with varigated yarns and a plain leg, but that gorgeous cable might tempt me!
Thanks! Robin has huge feet too, so I can relate! Makes socks literally a labour of love :)
Wow, double cables, what a challenge. They look fantastic and so cosy.
